Broadway sweethearts Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, who met while starring in the original company of Rent, were married on January 11 in Jamaica. The ceremony was small and attended only by a select group of family and friends, a spokesperson for Diggs confirmed to Broadway.com.
Diggs and Menzel met in 1995 when they were both cast in the New York Theatre Workshop production of Jonathan Larson's Rent, later transferring with the show to Broadway. They also starred together in the 2000 Manhattan Theatre Club production of The Wild Party and on the big screen in the film Just a Kiss.
Diggs is now known not only for his stage credits, which also include a recent stint in Broadway's Chicago, but for his burgeoning film career. His film credits include How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Go, The Wood, The Best Man, House on Haunted Hill, The Way of the Gun, Brown Sugar and Equilibrium. He can currently be seen on the big screen as the bandleader in the Chicago film.
Menzel, who earned a 1996 Tony Award nomination for Rent, has a busy stage career. She starred in the world premiere of Summer of '42 at Goodspeed Musicals in 2000 and played the role of Amneris in Aida last season. A singer/songwriter, Menzel released a solo album, Still I Can't Be Still in 1998 and frequently performs her own music at area concerts. In October, she participated in the Broadway.com sponsored Broadway Spotlight series. Menzel is expected to star in the world premiere of the Broadway-bound musical Wicked at San Francisco's Curran Theatre this spring. That tuner was originally expected to begin a four-week engagement on April 14, but is now scheduled to run from May 27 to June 29. Wicked, in which Menzel plays the central character of Elphaba, is aiming for a fall Broadway bow.
