The original cast recording of Broadway's Spring Awakening nabbed the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. The 50th annual Grammy celebration was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 10.
The album, produced by composer Duncan Sheik, was released by Decca Broadway on December 12, 2006. It features the complete Tony-winning score by Sheik and lyricist/librettist Steven Sater performed by original cast members Skylar Astin, Lilli Cooper, Christine Estrabrook, John Gallagher Jr., Gideon Glick, Jonathan Groff, Brian Charles Johnson, Lea Michele, Lauren Pritchard, Stephen Spinella, Phoebe Strole, Jonathan B. Wright and Remy Zaken.
Broadway composer Henry Krieger also won a Grammy for "Love You I Do," the new song he wrote for the Dreamgirls film with co-writer Siedah Garrett. In addition, Chaka Khan, who is currently playing Sofia in The Color Purple, won two awards, in the categories of R&B album for Funk This, R&B performance by a duo or group for "Disrespectful," a duet with Mary J. Blige.
