Born for Broadway had its beginnings at Marymount Manhattan College; event founder Sarah Galli, a theater major at Marymount, has brother who was rendered quadriplegic after suffering a severe spinal-cord injury. The mission of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is curing spinal-cord injury and improving the quality of life of those living with paralysis.
Best known for the 1978 film Superman, Christopher Reeve—who was paralyzed in an equestrian competition in 1995 and passed away in 2004—was a dyed-in-the-wool stage actor who first trod the boards at Williamstown Theatre Festival at age 15 and studied acting with John Houseman at Juilliard. His New York stage appearances include 1976’s Matter of Gravity his Broadway debut opposite Katharine Hepburn, 1989’s Winter’s Tale at the Public Theater directed by James Lapine, costarring Mandy Patinkin, Diane Venora and Alfre Woodard and Lanford Wilson’s 1980 drama Fifth of July with Swoosie Kurtz and Jeff Daniels.
Dana Morosini Reeve, who died of cancer in 2006, met her husband at Williamstown, where she appeared in The Rose Tattoo, Wild Oats, Tom Jones, Are We There Yet? and John Brown’s Body. She appeared on Broadway in More to Love and off-Broadway in Portraits.
