The Broadway-bound new musical Robin and the 7 Hoods will have its world premiere at the Old Globe in San Diego in July 2010. The show, directed by Casey Nicholaw, is part of a summer season that will include Adrian Noble’s productions of King Lear and The Madness of King George III and a new comedy by Joe DiPietro (Memphis) starring Marion Ross. The 2010 season kicks off a year-long celebration of the Old Globe’s 75th anniversary.
Robin and the 7 Hoods features classic tunes by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen and a book by Rupert Holmes. Inspired by the 1964 Rat Pack comedy, the show turns the Robin Hood tale on its head. When Nicky Robino, a suave, fast rising entrepreneur in Chicago's swinging 60s nightclub scene, tries to re organize organized crime, he finds himself falling for a maiden named Marion. Featuring songs such as "My Kind of Town," "Call Me Irresponsible" and "All the Way," the as-yet uncast show will run from July 14 to August 22, 2010.
The Old Globe’s Shakespeare Festival includes Noble’s production of King Lear (June 12-September 23), The Taming of the Shrew (June 16-September 26; director to be announced) and Noble’s production of Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III (June 19-September 24), the true account of the British monarch’s slide into insanity five years after losing the Revolutionary War.
Also on tap is the west coast premiere of Joe DiPietro’s romantic comedy The Last Romance (July 30-September 5), starring Marion Ross (Happy Days, Brothers and Sisters) and her life partner, Paul Michael, directed by Richard Seer. On an ordinary day in a routine life, an 80-year-old widower decides to take a different path on his daily walk that leads him to an unexpected second chance at love.
