Meryl Streep got her start at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater in the mid 1970s, and the superstar actress will return to the Public for a one-night benefit performance of Courage in Concert on October 19. Streep played the title role in the 2006 Central Park production of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, translated by Tony Kushner and directed by George C. Wolfe. The A-lister will be joined by co-stars Kevin Kline (her leading man in Sophie’s Choice), Jenifer Lewis, Austin Pendleton and Frederick Weller.
Featuring songs composed for the Public’s production by Jeanine Tesori, the concert will benefit the American Jewish World Service and Partners in Health. The event will also include appearances from the cast of Broadway’s Tony-winning revival of Hair.
“I am delighted to reunite with my friends from Mother Courage to benefit two extraordinary organizations,” Streep said in a statement. “Both American Jewish World Service and Partners in Health are deeply inspiring in their profound efforts to alleviate poverty and disease around the world.”
