Tony Award winner Jonathan Pryce will star in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker in the West End. The production, directed by Christopher Morahan, will play Trafalgar Studios beginning on January 12, 2010. Opening night is set for January 18.
The Caretaker, the first successful play by one of the seminal playwrights of his generation, was first produced in 1960. The production marks the 50th anniversary of the show. Pryce will play the role of Davies, a down and out tramp who is taken in by Aston. But when Aston's brother Mick shows up, personalities clash en route to discovering who, exactly, will be the odd man out. Peter McDonald will play Aston. Casting for Mick will be announced at a later date.
Pryce won Tonys for Miss Saigon and Comedians and an Olivier Award for Hamlet. His many theater credits include Glengarry Glen Ross, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Oliver! and My Fair Lady. In 1980, he played the role of Mick in the National Theatre’s production of The Caretaker with Kenneth Cranham and Warren Mitchell. His film credits include Brazil, Evita, Glengarry Glen Ross, Tomorrow Never Dies and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.
McDonald's stage credits include Dancing at Lughnasa and Resurrection Blues at London’s Old Vic Theatre, Exiles and The Aristocrats at the National Theatre and Glengarry Glen Ross in the West End. His television and film roles include Green Wing, Spooks, City of Vice, and The Damned United.
This limited engagement of The Caretaker is scheduled to play through April 17.
