The Roundabout Theatre Company is hunting for a replacement for the recently canceled production of Terrence McNally’s Lips Together, Teeth Apart, and may have found one in diva Sherie Rene Scott. The Broadway vet’s semi-autobiographical show Everyday Rapture, which played off-Broadway at Second Stage last spring, could fill the empty spot in the Roundabout’s season, according to The New York Times.
Scott is best known for her performances in Aida, The Little Mermaid and her Tony-nominated turn in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She wrote the show with Dick Scanlan (Thoroughly Modern Millie). In its off-Broadway incarnation, Everyday Rapture featured a cast of five, led by Scott. It was directed by Michael Mayer with musical supervision by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), who are both currently busy with Broadway’s American Idiot.
Everyday Rapture is described as the story of a young woman’s psycho-sexual-spiritual journey on the rocky path that separates her mostly Mennonite past from her mostly Manhattan future. Her life takes her from the cornfields of Kansas to the clover fields of New York with a disturbing detour through YouTube. The show includes songs made famous by David Byrne, George Harrison, U2, The Dap Kings and Judy Garland.
“Roundabout is exploring a number of options for this season’s final production that will reflect the quality that defines their mission,” a spokesperson told The Times. "Everyday Rapture is one of those being considered.”
