Billie Joe Armstrong will make his Broadway performing debut in the musical he co-wrote American Idiot. The Green Day frontman will play St. Jimmy in the show from September 28 through October 3.
Tony Vincent, who received a 2010 Tony nomination for playing the role, will take a two-week leave of absence due to a personal family matter, returning to the production on October 12. Understudies Joshua Kobak and Andrew Call will alternate in the role from October 5 through October 10.
American Idiot also stars John Gallagher Jr. as Johnny, Michael Esper as Will, Stark Sands as Tunny, Rebecca Naomi Jones as Whatshername, Christina Sajous as The Extraordinary Girl and Mary Faber as Heather. Based on the popular Green Day album of the same name, the musical opened on April 20 at the St. James Theatre and took home two Tony Awards in June.
