Exclusive! Sutton Foster Looks Back on Her ‘Thrilling’ Year as Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes

In the corporate world, employees leaving a job are often asked to sit through a sometimes grueling "exit interview" about their time at the company. Although that concept doesn't exist for Broadway performers, we think it's fun to check in with stars as they finish up a successful run, so we asked departing Anything Goes star Sutton Foster to look back on playing evangelist-turned-nightclub singer Reno Sweeney, a part that earned her a second Tony Award.

Why are you leaving?
I am leaving to film a new TV series for ABC Family called Bunheads.

Date of departure:
My final performance is the matinee on Sunday, March 11.

Looking back, how did you feel when you first got the job?
At first very excited, and then I became scared. I didn't know if I would be able to do it.

And how do you feel now that you’re leaving?
I feel very “full.” My heart feels very full. This experience has been so complete in so many ways, and I have never worked with a company so wonderful and generous, hard working and joyful. I will miss everyone so much, but I am also so excited about my new adventure.

What are three words you would use to describe your experience at the job?
Joyful. Thrilling. Challenging.

What was the easiest thing about the job?
Just coming to work. I always looked forward to walking in that stage door and seeing everyone.

What was the hardest thing?
The physical demands. I've never been so challenged physically, and maintaining that was a challenge.

What was the highlight of your time at the job?
Opening night and the Tony Awards... and all of the amazing people who came to see and support the show.

What skills do you think are required for future job applicants?
Tap dancing, spontaneity, joy, whimsy, sassy faces, devilish attitude, sense of humor and heart.

What advice would you give to future employees in your job position?
Pace yourself, rest when you can, stretch, take hot baths and relish in it all!

What will you miss most about the job?
The company of incredible people. I will miss all the little things we do backstage... all the moments that the audience doesn't see. And I'll miss singing those incredible songs every night.
