Twelve-year-old Josh Baker is the newest addition to the West End cast of Billy Elliot, becoming the 25th boy to play the title role in the Olivier Award-winning musical in London. He will alternate the role with Dean Charles-Chapman, Scott McKenzie and Rhys Yeomans.
Baker, who began acting at age five and dancing at seven, will be making his West End debut in Billy Elliot. His television credits include the BBC program Holby City and A Complete Guide to Parenting on ITV.
Baker joins a cast that includes Reece Barrett, Connor Kelly, Connor Lawson and Joe Massey, who alternate the role of Billy’s best friend Michael, and Francesca Mango, Emily Smith, and Emily Williams, who alternate the role of Debbie. well as Genevieve Lemon (Mrs. Wilkinson), Martin Marquez (Dad), Tom Lorcan (Tony), Diane Langton (Grandma), Chris McGlade (George), Kay Milbourne (Dead Mum), Kevin Patricks (Mr. Braithwaite) and Barnaby Meredith (Older Billy).
Based on the Oscar nominated film, Billy Elliot is the story of one boy’s dream to realise his ambitions against the odds. Set in the North East of England against the background of the historic 1984/85 miners’ strike, Billy pursues his passion for dance in secret to avoid disapproval of his struggling family. The smash hit Elton John-Lee Hall penned musical, which is also currently playing at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre, opened at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre in 2005.
