Benjamin Walker to Star in Broadway Transfer of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

It’s official: Populist tuner Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson will transfer to Broadway this fall, beginning performances on September 21 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The Public Theater’s acclaimed and much-extended emo-rock satire, written and directed by Alex Timbers with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, will star Benjamin Walker, who reportedly turned down the upcoming big screen X-Men flick to leap to Broadway with the production. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

An audacious mix of historical fact and invention, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson redefines America’s controversial seventh president—the man who invented the Democratic Party, doubled the size of our nation and signed the Indian Removal Acts that started the Trail of Tears—with a raucous blend of outrageous comedy, anarchic theatricality and an infectious emo rock score. The show, which had a LAB debut at the Public in 2009, originally opened on April 6, extending three times during a sellout run that ended June 27. The production went on to become the second highest grossing show in the Public’s downtown history.

In addition to Walker, the off-Broadway run of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson featured River Aguirre as Lyncoya, James Barry as Male Soloist, Michael Crane as Clay/Blackhawk, Michael Dunn as Calhoun, Greg Hildreth as Red Eagle, Jeff Hiller as John Quincy Adams, Lucas Near-Verbrugghe as Martin Van Buren, Maria Elena Ramirez as Rachel, Kate Cullen Roberts as Elizabeth, Ben Steinfeld as Monroe, Colleen Werthmann as the Storyteller and Emily Young as Female Soloist.

The creative team for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson will again feature scenic design by Donyale Werle, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Bart Fasbender and choreography by Danny Mefford. The show is produced by the Public Theater, Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel.
