The New Normal, the previously announced NBC pilot from Glee creator Ryan Murphy and starring The Book of Mormon's Andrew Rannells, has officially been greenlit, according to Deadline.com. As previously reported, Rannells will star as a gay dad in the sitcom which would mark Rannells' first major television role. No further casting has been announced at this time.
The single-camera sitcom, co-written by Murphy and Allison Adler and directed by Murphy, is described as "a heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple and the woman who becomes a surrogate to help them start a family."
Rannells received a Tony Award nomination for his work as Elder Price in the blockbuster musical The Book of Mormon. His previous Broadway credits include playing Link Larkin in Hairspray and Bob Gaudio in Jersey Boys. He will make his first on-screen TV appearance as a guest star in the upcoming HBO series Girls.
