The previously announced re-imagined production of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever starring Harry Connick Jr. will begin performances November 12 at Broadway's St. James Theatre. Opening night is set for December 11. Michael Mayer will direct the production, which features a new book by Peter Parnell. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
The new version of On a Clear Day follows Dr. Mark Bruckner (Connick) a handsome psychiatrist and professor who is still in love with his late wife. When Bruckner treats David Gamble, a quirky young florists' assistant, Bruckner puts Gamble under hypnosis to help him quit smoking so the young man can move in with his perfect boyfriend, Warren. During their session Bruckner stumbles upon what he believes to be Gamble's former self, a dazzling and self-possessed 1940s jazz singer named Melinda Wells. Bruckner is instantly smitten by Melinda and pursues a love affair with the woman, who's from another time and place and who may have never even existed.
Connick earned Tony nominations for starring in The Pajama Game and for composing Thou Shalt Not. He has also performed two concert series on Broadway, Harry Connick Jr. Live in Concert on Broadway and An Evening With Harry Connick Jr. and His Orchestra. As a musician he has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. His film and TV credits include Independence Day, Hope Floats, My Dog Skip, The Iron Giant, Bug, South Pacific and Will and Grace.
Featuring an original book by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Burton Lane and lyrics by Lerner, On a Clear Day first opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on October 17, 1965. The production earned Tony Award nominations for stars John Cullum and Barbara Harris, as well as for its score. The musical was later adapted for the screen in 1970 starring Barbra Streisand and Yves Montand.
On a Clear Day will be produced by Liza Lerner, Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman and Broadway Across America.
