Few stories have touched as many lives as that of Anne Frank, the young girl who chronicled her years hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam in her now famous diary. In Rinne Groff’s Compulsion, Tony winner Mandy Patinkin stars as Sid Silver, a Jewish man obsessed with bringing The Diary of Anne Frank first to the reading public, and then to the stage. Groff, who chronicled her journey with Compulsion here, based Silver on Meyer Levin, a journalist and screenwriter who was among the first to visit the concentration camps after World War II as a war correspondent. The haunting drama also employs marionettes and the talents of Hannah Cabell and Matte Osian as the play’s other characters.
