Tony winner John Gallagher Jr. has departed the Broadway production of Jersusalem to join the cast of Aaron Sorkin’s new HBO drama More As This Story Develops. After his final performance on July 17, Gallagher tweeted, “Farewell Lee. So long Flintock. It has been an honor & a pleasure being in Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem. Much love and thanks to cast & crew.” Jay Sullivan will make his Broadway debut as Gallagher’s replacement in the play, which is to close on August 21 before returning to the West End.
As previously reported, Gallagher will join a cast of theater vets in Sorkin’s newsroom drama, which is expected to debut on HBO in 2012. He reportedly will play the love interest of Alison Pill alongside Jeff Daniels (as a news anchor), Sam Waterston, Emily Mortimer and Thomas Sadoski.
Linking to an IMDB cast list of the show, Gallagher tweeted, “Oh yeah and this is why I am in L.A. I hope there hasn’t been some mistake.” A Tony winner for Spring Awakening, the actor has appeared on Broadway in American Idiot and Rabbit Hole and off-Broadway in Farragut North, Port Authority and Kimberly Akimbo.
