The Tony Award-winning musical Memphis will be captured live in performance for what’s being dubbed “high definition exhibition in digital cinemas nationwide.” The filming will take place during performances from January 18 to January 21 at the Shubert Theatre, using multiple high definition cameras and 96 tracks of sound recording. The resulting digital film will be ready for distribution in the spring, with theaters and dates to be announced later.
Emmy Award-winning director Don Roy King (Saturday Night Live, The Early Show, Survivor) and Grammy- and Emmy-winning sound producer Matt Kaplowitz will lead the production team for Broadway Worldwide. Original Memphis cast members to be featured in the live performance film includes Tony nominees Chad Kimball and Montego Glover as lovers Huey and Felicia, with Derrick Baskin as Gator, J. Bernard Calloway as Delray, James Monroe Iglehart as Bobby, Michael McGrath as Mr. Simmons, and Cass Morgan as Mama.
Memphis opened on Broadway on October 19, 2009, and went on to win four 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
