Five-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Terence Blanchard will compose original music for the world premiere Broadway production of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ The Motherf**ker With the Hat. The play, which stars Bobby Cannavale, Chris Rock, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Annabella Sciorra and Yul Vázquez, is set to begin previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 15 and open on April 11 for a 15-week limited engagement, directed by Anna D. Shapiro.
Blanchard, who will make his Broadway debut, has established himself as one of the most influential jazz musicians and composers of his generation. This Grammy-winning artist tours with his own band and performs with jazz greats including Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, as well as with the rap artist Common. He is currently working on his first opera.
The Motherf**ker With the Hat is described as a high-octane verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery. Jackie (Cannavale) and Veronica (Rodriguez) have been in love since the eighth grade. But now Jackie is on parole and living clean and sober under the guidance of his sponsor, Ralph D (Rock). Meanwhile, his volatile soul mate is fiercely loving but far from sober. Still, their love is pure. And true. Nothing can come between them, except a hat.
