Complete casting has been announced for the upcoming Broadway musical The People in the Picture. The show, which features a book & lyrics by Iris Rainer Dart and music by Mike Stoller and Artie Butler, will begin performances on April 1 and open on April 28 at Studio 54, directed by Leonard Foglia.
In addition to previously announced leading lady Donna Murphy, the cast will feature Alexander Gemignani (Moishe), Louis Hobson (Doctor Goldblum), Christopher Innvar (Chaim), Nicole Parker (Red), Rachel Resheff (Jenny), Hal Robinson (Doovie, Rabbi Velvel), Lewis J. Stadlen (Avram Krinsky) and Chip Zien (Yoshie Pinsker).
Rounding out the company are Brad Bradley, Rachel Bress, Jeremy Davis, Emilee Dupre, Maya Goldman, Shannon Lewis, Jessica Lea Patty, Megan Reinking, Jeffrey Schecter, Paul Anthony Stewart and Stuart Zagnit.
Bubbie (Murphy) is a grandmother in 1970s New York City who was once the darling of the Yiddish Theatre in pre-war Poland. Although her granddaughter Jenny is enchanted by her tales of the old world, her daughter Red, a TV writer, will do anything to keep from looking back at the Holocaust and her childhood in Warsaw.
Gemignani’s Broadway credits include Sunday in the Park With George, Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd and Assassins, and he has been seen off- Broadway in Road Show and Avenue Q. Innvar has appeared on Broadway in The Three Penny Opera, 110 In The Shade, Les Miserables and Victor/Victoria. Off-Broadway credits include Floyd Collins, Gun-Shy, The Boys In The Band; A New Brain, The Witch Of Edmonton and Time And Again
Parker has been seen on Broadway as Elphaba in Wicked and in Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. Other theater credits include How to Succeed…, Romeo and Juliet Musical and The Magic Flute She was an actress and contributing writer on Fox's MADtv, and recently appeared in the Judd Apatow film Funny People. Resheff’s Broadway credits include Shrek, Billy Elliot and Mary Poppins, and her other stage credits are Laughing Matters, Freckleface Strawberry, Suprema, The Big Meal and The Family.
Robinson’s stage credits include Cabaret, Old Wicked Songs, Grand Hotel, Broadway, Personals, Life Is A Dream, Nick & Nora and The Fantasticks. Stadlen has appeared on Broadway in The Producers, Minnie’s Boys, The Sunshine Boys, Voltaire, Candide (Tony nomination), The Female Odd Couple, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, The Man Who Came to Dinner and 45 Seconds From Broadway.
Zien created the role of the Baker in Into the Woods and the role of Mendel in Falsettos. Broadway credits include The Country Girl, Les Miserables, Grand Hotel, The Boys From Syracuse, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, All Over Town and The Suicide. Hobson appeared on Broadway in Next to Normal; other stage credits include West Side Story, Hair, Cabaret, Miss Saigon and Assassins.
The People in the Picture’s creative team includes Paul Gemignani (musical direction), Michael Starobin (orchestrations), Andy Blankenbuehler (musical staging), Riccardo Hernandez (sets), Ann Hould-Ward (costumes), James F. Ingalls (lights), Dan Moses Schreier (sound), Elaine J. McCarthy (projections), Paul Huntley (hair & wigs) and Angelina Avallone (makeup). Roundabout Theatre Company will produce the limited engagement, set to play through June 19, 2011.
