When we heard that Kelli O’Hara would be back in South Pacific for the show’s final two weeks, including a televised performance on PBS’ Live from Lincoln Center on August 18, we wondered: What about Matthew Morrison as Lt. Cable? It appears that the Glee star hopes to join O’Hara and other original cast members to help the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic go out in style. According to a show spokesperson, Morrison’s return to South Pacific will depend on his filming schedule for Glee, which hasn’t been determined yet.
In a 2008 Q&A interview with Broadway.com, Morrison said of his South Pacific character, "He's as straight as an arrow, but he's really lost. I feel good about myself playing this guy because he's got a lot of issues with what's going on in his life. The whole 'You've got to be carefully taught' idea—he's full of questions about where to go and what's right and wrong. So I enjoy playing him because I feel like he's worse off than I am."
South Pacific opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on April 3, 2008, and is set to close on August 22. Tony Award winner Paulo Szot will return to the role of Emile de Becque on July 6, and O’Hara will return on August 10 to finish the run alongside original headliners Danny Burstein (Luther Billis), Loretta Ables Sayre (Bloody Mary) and Li Jun Li (Liat).
