A Streetcar Named Desire, Starring Blair Underwood, Heads to Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre

The planned revival of Tennessee Williams classic A Streetcar Named Desire will have a Broadway berth this season after all, according to the New York Times. Following the cancellation of new musical Rebecca, Streetcar will move into the now tenant-less Broadhurst Theatre later this spring. No official dates have been announced for the show, which will star Blair Underwood, Nicole Ari Parker, Wood Harris and Daphne Rubin-Vega, who recently spoke to Broadway.com about the project. Streetcar tells the tragic story of fragile former schoolteacher Blanche (Parker), who leaves the family plantation house and moves to New Orleans to live with her sister, Stella (Rubin-Vega), and Stella’s animalistic husband, Stanley (Underwood). She quickly gets a gritty life lesson in the seamy, steamy underbelly of 1940s life in the French Quarter.

A Streetcar Named Desire is being produced on Broadway by Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones of Front Row Productions, which presented the hit 2008 Broadway revival of Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof featuring an African-American cast led by James Earl Jones, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose and Terrence Howard.
