David Cromer will direct Nina Raine's new comedy Tribes at off-Broadway's Barrow Street Theatre. Performances begin on a yet-to-be-determined date in February 2012, with opening night set for March 4. Casting will be announced shortly.
Tribes follows Billy, a deaf man raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect cocoon of his home of his parents' house. He has adapted brilliantly to his hearing family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood.
The play received its world premiere at London's Royal Court Theatre in 2010 and earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Play.
Tribes is produced by Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian and Tom Wirtshafter, who collaborated with Cromer on the record-breaking revival of Our Town, also at the Barrow Street Theatre.
