Without a doubt, David Yazbek is one of the most exciting Broadway songwriters to emerge over the past decade. A former rocker, he turned a group of working class losers into believable musical comedy heroes in The Full Monty, wrote a scoreful of genuinely funny tunes for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and has now presented his most sophisticated and challenging score yet, for the Lincoln Center Theater musical take on Pedro Almodovar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Broadway.com sat down with Yazbek to discuss the challenge of adapting the Spanish-language film for the stage and was treated to a private concert of three of the show's standout tunes, "My Crazy Heart," "Madrid" and "Island." So sit back and enjoy some time with a musical master.
