Tracy Letts' new play Superior Donuts has booked the Music Box Theatre (current home of Letts’ August: Osage County, which closes June 28) for its forthcoming Broadway engagement. Superior Donuts will begin previews on September 16 and open on October 1, directed by Tina Landau. Casting will be announced shortly.
Described as a provocative comedy set in the heart of one of Chicago’s most diverse communities, Superior Donuts centers on Arthur Przybyszewski, who owns a decrepit donut shop in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Franco Wicks, a black teenager who is his only employee, wants to change the shop for the better. The play explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship.
Superior Donuts was first produced at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in June 2008 and starred Michael McKean and Jon Michael Hill. The play will be produced on Broadway by Jeffrey Richards, Jean Doumanian, Steve Traxler and Jerry Frankel, the team behind August: Osage County.
