Nicholas Rodriguez, who recently joined the cast of TV’s One Life to Live, will step into the hit off-Broadway musical The Toxic Avenger from July 1 through July 19 at New World Stages. He replaces Demond Green, who will take a three-week break from the show. Rodriguez has understudied the male roles in Toxic Avenger since its off-Broadway premiere in March.
Rodriguez joins current cast members Nancy Opel, Celina Carvajal, Nick Cordero and Matthew Saldivar. His additional stage credits include Broadway’s Tarzan, as well as off-Broadway’s Almost Heaven: The Songs of John Denver. The actor has also appeared regionally in Oklahoma!, Angels and Bajour.
Based on the classic 1985 cult film by Lloyd Kaufman, The Toxic Avenger premiered this past fall at The George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ, where the show became the biggest grossing musical in the theater’s 34-year history. Set in the mythic town of Tromaville, Exit 13B off the New Jersey Turnpike, it’s the story of an aspiring earth scientist/ecological activist, who’s transformed into a seven-foot mutant after being tossed into a vat of radioactive goo. Armed with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark, he becomes New Jersey’s first superhero—determined to clean-up the town’s toxic waste, end global warming and woo Sarah, the prettiest, blindest librarian in town.
