As we previously speculated, Hamlet, starring Jude Law, will play Broadway. The Donmar Warehouse production, directed by artistic director Michael Grandage, will begin previews at the Broadhurst Theatre on September 12 and open there on October 6.
William Shakespeare’s iconic revenge tragedy finds Prince Hamlet consumed with grief and determined to avenge his father’s apparent murder, with devastating consequences for his family and the kingdom.
Law returns made his Broadway debut in 1995 with a Tony-nominated turn in Jean Cocteau’s Indiscretions (Les Parents Terribles). His other theater credits include Les Parents Terribles (National Theatre), Dr. Faustus, ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore (Young Vic) and Death of a Salesman (West Yorkshire Playhouse). His film credits include The Talented Mr Ripley (BAFTA Film Award), Wilde (Evening Standard British Film Award), Cold Mountain, Road to Perdition, Closer, Alfie, The Aviator and Sleuth and the upcoming Sherlock Holmes, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Repossession Mambo.
Cast members from the London production of Hamlet, which plays through August 22 at the Donmar, are expected to join Law on Broadway. The production is also scheduled for a sold-out run at Kronborg Castle, Elsinore in Denmark from August 25 through August 30.
The London cast (none of which are confirmed for the Broadway production at this time) includes Kevin R. McNally as Claudius, Penelope Wilton as Gertrude, Matt Ryan as Horatio, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ophelia, Ron Cook as Polonius, Peter Eyre as Ghost/Player King, Alex Waldmann as Laertes, David Burke as Gravedigger, Ian Drysdale as Osric, Harrt Attwell as Cornelius, Jenny Funnell as Player Queen, Sean Jackson as Reynaldo, Gwilym Lee as Guildenstern, John MacMillan as Rosencrantz and Alan Turkington as Marcellus/Fortinbras.
The production features sets and costumes by Christopher Oram and lighting design by Neil Austin. The composer and sound designer is Adam Cork.
Hamlet is expected to play on Broadway for a 12-week limited engagement.
