American Idol runner-up and Broadway alum Diana DeGarmo will take the stage off-Broadway, joining the cast of campy musical comedy The Toxic Avenger beginning August 14 at New World Stages. DeGarmo assumes the role of “hot blind librarian” Sarah, currently played by Celina Carvajal.
DeGarmo will join a cast that includes Nick Cordero, Demond Green, Jonathan Root and Nancy Opel.
Since placing second to Broadway alum Fantasia Barrino on the third season of American Idol, DeGarmo has appeared on Broadway in the musical Hairspray and in the first national tours of Brooklyn: The Musical and OZ, The Musical. She has also performed in Back to Bacharach in Los Angeles.
Based on the classic 1985 cult film by Lloyd Kaufman, The Toxic Avenger is set in the mythical town of Tromaville, Exit 13B, off the New Jersey Turnpike. An aspiring earth scientist, Melvin Ferd the Third, is determined to clean up the town’s burgeoning toxic waste, until he is tossed into a vat of radioactive goo and emerges as a seven-foot mutant freak and New Jersey’s first superhero. The musical features a book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, music by David Bryan and direction by John Rando.
