Broadway alum and Saturday Night Live veteran Ana Gasteyer is set to star in Manhattan Theatre Club’s upcoming production of The Royal Family. Written by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber and directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, the production begins performances on September 15 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and opens October 8.
Gasteyer, who will appear as Kitty Dean, joins previously announced cast members Stephen Collins (Gilbert Marshall), John Glover (Herbert Dean), Rosemary Harris (Fanny Cavendish), Jan Maxwell (Julie Cavendish), Tony Roberts (Oscar Wolfe) and Reg Rogers (Tony Cavendish).
This classic 1927 comedy of manners follows the Cavendishes, a famous family of stage stars, as they go about the drama of the day: choosing scripts, dashing off to a performance and stealing kisses with handsome beaus. But what’s this business about the younger Miss Cavendish wanting to quit the stage for domestic bliss? Never, darling!
Gasteyer’s Broadway credits include Wicked, The Threepenny Opera and The Rocky Horror Show. Off-Broadway, she has appeared in MTC’s Kimberly Akimbo, Roulette, The Vagina Monologues and Cinderella. Gasteyer is best known for her six seasons on Saturday Night Live, and has appeared on the big screen in films including Reefer Madness, Mean Girls, What Women Want, Dick, What’s the Worst That Could Happen and The Women.
The Royal Family will feature scenic design by John Lee Beatty, costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Kenneth Posner, sound by Darron L. West, original music by Maury Yeston, wig and hair design by Tom Watson and fight choreography by Rick Sordelet.
Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.
