9 to 5, the new musical inspired by the 1980 workplace comedy of the same name, will be clocking out for good. The production, directed by Joe Mantello and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, will play its last performance at the Marquis Theatre on September 6, 2009, after 24 previews and 148 performances.
An extensive national tour of the Broadway production will launch in September 2010 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville.
Composed by hit-maker Dolly Parton and starring Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty as a trio of underappreciated retro office workers, 9 to 5 opened to mixed reviews on April 30, 2009. The production garnered five Tony Award nominations, including nods for Janney in her musical debut, but failed to be recognized in the Best Musical category. For the week ending July 26, it played to 69.73% of capacity at the 1,611-seat Marquis. 9 to 5 had a pre-Broadway run at Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre in September 2008.
9 to 5 follows the storyline of the film, which was adapted for the stage by original screenwriter Patricia Resnick. When pushed to the boiling point by their boss, Franklin Hart Jr. (Marc Kudisch, in a Tony nominated turn), super-efficient office manager Violet Newstead (Janney), frazzled divorcee Judy Bernly (Block) and sexy executive secretary Doralee Rhodes (Hilty) hatch a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot, which quickly spins out of control.
The show features scenic design by Scott Pask, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer and sound design by John Shivers, with musical supervision by Stephen Oremus. 9 to 5 is produced by Green State Productions, Richard Levi, John McColgan/Moya Doherty/Edgar Dobie, James L. Nederlander/Terry Allen Kramer, Independent Presenters Network, JAM Theatricals, Bud Martin, Michael Watt, The Weinstein Co/Sonia Friedman/Dede Harris, Center Theatre Group, Norton Herrick/Matthew C Blank/Joan Stein, Toni Dowgiallo, and GFOUR Productions.
