Jerusalem, Starring Tony Winner Mark Rylance, Transfers to the West End

Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem will transfer to the West End in January, producer Sonia Friedman told Variety. A Broadway berth is also in the works for the acclaimed production, which is directed by Ian Rickson and stars Mark Rylance, who won the 2008 Best Actor in a Play Tony Award for his performance in Boeing-Boeing.
 
The play, which debuted at London’s Royal Court Theatre in July, centers on Johnny Byron, a rural degenerate and wanted man. On the morning of the local county fair this modern-day Pied Piper is a wanted man. The council officials want to serve him an eviction notice, his children want their dad to take them to the fair, Troy Whitworth wants to give him a serious kicking and a motley crew of mates wants his ample supply of drugs and alcohol.

In addition to Rylance, the Royal Court cast of Jerusalem featured Mackenzie Crook (Rickson’s recent production of The Seagull on Broadway), Tom Brooke, Alan David and Lucy Montgomery as well as Jessica Barden, Greg Burridge, Lewis Coppen, Aimeé-Ffion Edwards, Lenny Harvey, Gerard Horan, Danny Kirrane, Charlotte Mills, Sarah Moyle, Dan Poole, Harvey Robinson and Barry Sloane.

The show featured set and costume design by Ultz, lighting design by Mimi Jordan Sherin, sound design by Ian Dickinson for Autograph and original music by Stephen Warbeck.

No dates or theater has been announced for the West End engagement, but Friedman did confirm that the entire Royal Court cast and creative team are on board for the run.
