The National Theatre, which successfully broadcast its production of Phedre starring Academy Award winner Helen Mirren in June 2009, will continue its National Theatre Live initiative with the airing of its current production, All's Well That Ends Well. A live performance of Shakespeare classic, directed by Marianne Elliott at the Olivier Theatre, will hit screens across New York City and throughout the U.S. on October 1.
Tri-state area stage fans looking to catch the performance can attend screenings at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Cinema Arts Centre, City Cinema 123, Skirball Center for the Performing Arts/NYU or Kew Gardens Cinema (all in New York); Fairfield University (Connecticut); Monmouth University (New Jersey); and the Shakespeare Theatre Company (Washington DC).
Set against a background of sexism and snobbery, All's Well That Ends Well turns fairytale logic on its head in the wonderous, bittersweet story of feisty but lowly Helena, who falls in love with Bertram, a haughty count. To gain his hand she must tackle a string of impossible tasks that, even if accomplished, hardly guarantee his love. The plot only thickens when Helena refuses to give Bertram up. The National's cast is led by Oliver Ford Davies (the King of France), Clare Higgins (Countess of Rossillion), Conleth Hill (Parolles), George Rainsford (Bertram) and Michelle Terry (Helena).
