The producers of the Tony-nominated hit musical Rock of Ages and Broadway.com are announcing the dawn of a prestigious new theatrical prize: The Golden Mullet Awards. The first annual Golden Mullet Awards ceremony will be presented live from the show's home at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on October 26, directly following the 8pm performance.
Nominations for the 2009 Golden Mullets will be announced on October 5, and, unlike the Tony, Drama Desk or Outer Critics Circle Awards, voting is open to the public. Those wishing to cast a ballot can do so on Broadway.com following the announcement of the nominees.
Billed as "Broadway's fourth-most coveted award," the tongue-in-cheek Golden Mullet aims to recognize the categories of Broadway talent that audiences care most about, from Most Kick-Ass Band to Best Broadway "Heat of the Moment" Moment. According to producers, a "select group of prestigious theater professionals determines the nominees based on merit and the likelihood that they'll show up to the awards." Admission to the presentation, notably the only awards show to take place during the fall season, is free with purchase of a ticket for the October 26 show… or if you're Hugh Jackman.
Rock of Ages is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where small town girl Sherri meets big city rocker Drew in L.A.’s most famous rock club. Their love story is told through the face-melting hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Poison, Asia, Whitesnake and many more.
The show was written by Chris D’Arienzo, directed by Kristin Hanggi and choreographed by Kelly Devine. It currently stars Constantine Maroulis, James Carpinello, Kerry Butler, Adam Dannheisser, Mitchell Jarvis, Michele Mais, Lauren Molina, Tom Lenk, Ericka Hunter, Jeremy Jordan, Michael Minarik, Angel Reed, Bahiyah Sayyed-Gaines, Becca Tobin, Katherine Tokarz, Andre Ward, Tad Wilson and Jeremy Woodard.
