A Boy and His Soul, written by and starring Colman Domingo is extending for two weeks. Directed by Tony Kelly, the production will now play through November 1 at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre.
Domingo describes his A Boy and His Soul as a "whirlwind trip via the phenomenal soul collection of a young, black, inner-city gay boy and his complex family." The show reflects on family situations inspired by soul music, and vice-versa, dealing with themes like loss, the celebration of life and soul searching with the help of music.
Domingo appeared last season on Broadway in the Tony Award-nominated Passing Strange, and can be seen in Spike Lee’s feature film of the stage show. Additional Broadway credits include Well. Regionally, he has appeared in Coming Home (Long Wharf Theatre), the world premiere of A Boy and His Soul (Thick House) and The People’s Temple (Berkeley Repertory Theatre). As a director, he has helmed the off-Broadway productions Exit Cuckoo and Single Black Female.
In addition to A Boy And His Soul, the Vineyard's 2009-10 season includes the previously announced world premiere of The Metal Children, written and directed by Adam Rapp, the new musical The Burnt Part Boys by Mariana Elder, Nathan Tysen and Chris Miller, directed by Erica Schmidt, and a developmental lab production of The Scottsboro Boys with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, book by David Thompson, and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman.
