Douglas Hodge will return to London’s revival of La Cage aux Folles for a five-week run. The actor, who won an Olivier Award for his performance as Albin in the Broadway-bound production, will begin performances at the West End’s Playhouse Theatre on November 30.
Hodge will also play Albin on Broadway when the production moves to the Longacre Theatre in April 2010. His recent credits include Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls opposite Ewan McGregor, Titus Andronicus, Dumb Show, Pericles and more than 10 Pinter plays including Moonlight and The Caretaker in the West End. His film credits include Vanity Fair, Mansfield Park and Scenes of a Sexual Nature. He will be joined by Denis Lawson as Georges, who played alongside him when the show opened in the West End in October 2008.
La Cage aux Folles, directed by Terry Johnson, began life at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory and went on to win 2009 Olivier Awards for Best Revival. The story centers on nightclub owner Georges, his partner Albin (who headlines under the name Zaza), and Georges’ son, Jean-Michel, who’s engaged to the daughter of a right-wing politico.The show features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret.
London’s La Cage currently stars John Barrowman and Simon Burke. Hodge will end his limited engagement in the production on January 2.
