Tony Roberts will return to the stage for the opening night performance of Manhattan Theatre Club’s Broadway revival of The Royal Family, press reps confirmed just after 4PM on October 8. The show is scheduled to begin at 6:45 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Roberts had fallen ill during the October 4 matinee, which was halted and cancelled. The actor was hospitalized at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center for what his daughter Nicole later called “a minor seizure” and was placed on medication “which should prevent any further incidents,” she said.
Roberts plays Oscar Wolfe, loyal agent of the family of actors at the center of the comedy by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. During his absence, which coincided with press performances, understudy Anthony Newfield played the role.
In addition to Roberts, the cast of The Royal Family includes Rosemary Harris, Jan Maxwell, Ana Gasteyer, Larry Pine, Reg Rogers and Kelli Barrett. MTC’s Broadway revival is directed by Doug Hughes.
