Chita Rivera, Martha Plimpton, Rebecca Luker, Leslie Uggams, Norm Lewis, Michael Esper, De'Adre Aziza and Jeanine Tesori are among the Broadway stage regulars who will appear as part of Lincoln Center's American Songbook series beginning this winter. The string of concerts and story-telling events runs from January 13, 2010, through March 6 at the Allen Room of Frederick P. Rose Hall.
The series also includes an array of indie and hipster favorites, including Marianne Faithfull, Brooklyn-based rockers Dirty Projectors and Nellie McKay, who will perform a tribute to Doris Day. The January 27 performance features a Hal Willner-produced musical exploration of the David Lehman book A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, starring Rufus Wainwright, Van Dyke Parks and Bill Frisell crooning the tunes of Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and various other Jewish songwriters.
Marianne Faithful kicks off the American Songbook series on January 13, following by Luker's solo concert on January 14. Plimpton, who showed off her singing in Pal Joey, will perform an evening titled "A Woman of Color" on January 16. Lewis, Esper and Aziza will form the cast of "Michael Friedman: Adventures in Reality," performing songs by the Civilians' resident composer on January 30. Uggams will perform on February 20, and Tesori will appear with as-yet-unnamed guest artists performing her songs on March 5. Chita Rivera will cap off the series on March 6.
