The new Dame Edna show has set Broadway dates. Australia’s most beloved (and outspoken) “housewife,” Dame Edna Everage, will return to Broadway for the third time in It’s All About Me. The limited engagement will begin performances on March 6 and open on March 23, 2010 at a Shubert theater to be announced. Four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks is set to direct.
It’s All About Me shares a comparable title to another upcoming Broadway show: Michael Feinstein’s All About Me. Dame Edna shared her thoughts on the similarity in a statement: “It’s All About Me is my title. While I was saddened to hear that Mr. Feinstein did not heed my sage advice to change the title of his show, I’m overjoyed to hear that he at least took my suggestion to open his show after mine. I’m sure Mrs. Feinstein is very proud of her son.”
Dame Edna is the lavender-haired comic creation of Melbourne-born actor and writer Barry Humphries, who has appeared on Broadway in Dame Edna: The Royal Tour (winner of a special Tony Award in 2000) and Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance (nominated for a Best Special Theatrical Event Tony in 2005). The character has headlined a pair of talk shows (notably The Dame Edna Experience) and appeared often onstage in London and around the world. Humphries made his Broadway debut in 1963 in Oliver!
