The off-Broadway production of The Toxic Avenger has set a closing date of January 3, 2010, before embarking on a national tour. The musical began previews on March 18 and opened on April 6 at New World Stages and will have played more than 300 performances upon closing, directed by John Rando.
Based on the 1985 classic cult film, The Toxic Avenger features music and lyrics by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan and book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro co-writers of the new Broadway musical Memphis. The cast includes American Idol runner-up Diana DeGarmo, Nick Cordero, Demond Green, Jonathan Root and Nancy Opel.
Described as both a charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical, The Toxic Avenger includes an unlikely hero, his beautiful blind girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor and the most memorable and unbelievable duet ever seen on a New York stage.
Details of the show’s national tour have not been announced. A Toronto production of The Toxic Avenger opened on Halloween.
