Now that the original Broadway cast of Hair is officially headed for London, with previews to begin at the Gielgud Theatre on April 1, 2010, the announcement has come that a completely new Tribe will debut on Broadway beginning on March 9. Although it’s not unusual for cast shifts to occur at a musical’s one-year mark (Hair began previews at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on March 6, 2009), it’s rare for a cast of 26 to be replaced in one fell swoop.
“I am thrilled that another Tribe will be born anew next spring, and that they will take the show to a new level here in New York,” Hair director Diane Paulus said in a statement. “With every step along the journey of making this Hair, the show has changed and grown, and it is my absolute intention to continue that process with a new cast. I am looking forward to the unleashing of a new Tribe and to this next, most exciting, moment in the life of Hair."
Upon opening in London, many of the Hair actors (including Tony nominee Will Swenson and Tribe members Bryce Ryness, Allison Case, Darius Nichols and Kacie Sheik) have been with the show for almost three years, since it was originally presented as a concert in Central Park in September 2007.
