It’s a pairing with the potential to cause cardiac arrest in musical theater fans nationwide: Idina Menzel as the birth mother of Rachel, the singing high school diva played by Lea Michele in Glee. According to an interview with Menzel’s husband Taye Diggs on Fancast.com, the Tony-winning Wicked star is game. “I know that she would love that,” Diggs said. “[Appearing on Glee] would be awesome.”
During her Spring Awakening run, Michele spoke about her dream of appearing in Wicked on Broadway, and she sang Elphaba’s anthem “Defying Gravity” on Glee. The character of Rachel is said to have gay dads, but so far, the character’s parents have not appeared on the show.
In the Fancast interview, Diggs said that Menzel and Michele “are fans of each other” and that he and Menzel saw the younger actress in Spring Awakening. The couple records Glee every week and are “so happy to see a lot of these theater kids [like Michele] get the opportunity to do some television work.”
Diggs is part of the cast of the ABC medical series Private Practice. He and Menzel are parents of a baby boy, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, born on September 3. The couple met when they played Maureen and Benny in the original cast of Rent.
