Tom Wopat, Norm Lewis, Euan Morton and Matthew Scott have joined the cast of Roundabout Theatre Company's world premiere musical Sondheim on Sondheim, which begins previews March 19, 2010, at Studio 54. The production, conceived and directed by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, opens April 22. The limited engagement is set to run through June 13.
Wopat, Lewis, Morton and Scott join previously announced stars Barbara Cook, Vanessa Williams and Leslie Kritzer. Michael Arden, who had originally been announced as part of the new tuner, has withdrawn from the production due to scheduling conflicts.
Sondheim On Sondheim is described as an intimate portrait of the famed composer in his own words and music. Through the use of exclusive interview footage, audiences get an inside look at Sondheim’s personal life and artistic process. An ensemble cast of Broadway’s best will perform brand-new arrangements of over two dozen Sondheim tunes, ranging from the beloved to the obscure. Directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator Lapine, the production aims to take viewers inside the life and mind of one ordinary New Yorker with an extraordinary talent.
Wopat's numerous Broadway credits include Chicago, Glengarry Glen Ross, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls, City of Angels, I Love My Wife, Annie Get Your Gun and A Catered Affair, the latter two of which earned him Tony Award nominations. Off-Broadway, he has been seen in The Guys, Olympus on My Mind, A Bistro Car on the CNR and Oklahoma. His long career in television includes Standoff, Smallville, All My Children, Home Improvement, Cybill and The Dukes of Hazzard.
Lewis' Broadway credits include The Little Mermaid, Les Miserables, Chicago, Amour, The Wild Party, Side Show, Miss Saigon and Tommy. Off-Broadway credits count Dessa Rose, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Captains Courageous and A New Brain. Numerous concert appeareances include Chess, Dreamgirls, Golden Boy, Sweeney Tood and The Fantastics. On the screen, Lewis has been seen in Preaching to the Choir, Confidences, Mystery Woman, Cosby, Strong Medicine, All My Children and As the World Turns.
Morton received an Olivier Award nomination for originating the role of Boy George in the musical Taboo, reprising the role in a Tony Award nominated turn on Broadway. Morton also appeared on Broadway in the revival of Cyrano De Bergerac. Additional stage credits include Brundibar at the New Victory Theatre, Tommy at the Bay Street Theatre, Measure for Pleasure at the Public and Howard Katz and Leaves of Glass off-Broadway.
Scott has been seen on Broadway in Jersey Boys, A Catered Affair and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Regional credits include The Light in the Piazza, The Music of Kander and Ebb, Ace, Ragtime, West Side Story, Side by Side by Sondheim, Les Miserables, Swing! and 1776.
