The first-ever Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury, will record a new Broadway cast album. The news comes while the starry production, helmed by Trevor Nunn, continues its preview period in anticipation of a December 13 opening at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The album, which will be a joint effort by PS Classics and Nonesuch Records, will be recorded January 4, 2010.
Sondheim's A Little Night Music Score includes the iconic "Send in the Clowns" as well as "The Miller's Son," "A Weekend in the Country," "Liaisons" and "Every Day a Little Death." The tuner is based on the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night. Set in Sweden at the turn of the twentieth century, it follows three lovestruck couples as they lose, and find, each other during a long midsummer night on a country estate.
In addition to Jones and Lansbury, the show stars Alexander Hanson, Aaron Lazar, Erin Davie, Leigh Ann Larkin, Hunter Ryan Herdlicka, Ramona Mallory, Stephen R. Buntrock, Jayne Patterson, Marissa McGowan, Kevin David Thomas, Betsy Morgan, Katherin Leigh Doherty, Keaton Whittaker, Karen Murphy, Erin Stewart, Kevin Vortmann and Bradley Dean.
The Night Music album will be produced by PS Classics' Tommy Krasker, who has produced over a dozen recordings of Sondheim's work. A release date is still to be announced.
