It’s official: Hangover groom Justin Bartha has signed on to make his Broadway debut in the forthcoming revival of Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor. The farcical comedy will begin previews on March 11 at the Music Box Theatre and open on April 4, directed by Stanley Tucci.
Bartha joins a complete cast that includes previously announced stars Anthony LaPaglia, Tony Shalhoub, Brooke Adams, Mary Catherine Garrison, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Jay Klaitz and Jan Maxwell.
Set in the 1930s, Lend Me a Tenor is a madcap screwball comedy that takes place when Tito Merelli, the fiery-tempered and world famous Italian superstar, arrives in Cleveland to make his debut with the local opera and promptly goes missing. As Saunders, the show’s presenter, conspires to cover for Tito’s absence, placate his hot-blooded wife, and distract his most passionate fans, chaos on a truly operatic level ensues.
In addition to playing would-be groom Doug Billings in The Hangover, Bartha co-starred with Catherine Zeta-Jones in The Rebound and in two National Treasure movies as well as in films such as Failure to Launch, New York, I Love You and the forthcoming Holy Rollers.
Lend Me a Tenor premiered on Broadway in 1989 and received seven Tony Award nominations, winning two. The play has been translated into 16 languages and produced in more than 25 countries.
The Broadway revival’s creative team includes John Lee Beatty (set designer), Martin Pakledinaz, (costume design), Kenneth Posner (lighting design), Peter Hylenski (sound design) and David Loud (musical supervisor).
Lend Me a Tenor is produced by the Araca Group, Stuart Thompson, Carl Moellenberg, Rodney Rigby, Olympus Theatricals, Broadway Across America in association with Lisa Cartwright and Wendy Federman/Jamie deRoy.
