The theatrical force known as Elaine Stritch showed she's got no intention of slowing down despite her upcoming 85th birthday. The Tony winner kicked off a gig celebrating Stephen Sondheim at Cafe Carlyle on January 5. The cabaret show, entitled At Home at the Carlyle: Elaine Stritch Singin' Sondheim... One Song at a Time," plays the venue (a favorite of Stritch's—she appeared there most recently in Elaine Stritch at Home at the Caryle...Again in 2006) through January 30. The show's debut performance wowed an audience packed with discerning critics and colleagues, including Barbara Cook, Christine Ebersole, Mike Nichols, Nora Ephron and Sherie Rene Scott, all of whom made sure to stop backstage and let the star know how brightly she's still shining.
