Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall (Grease, The Pajama Game) has signed on to helm the new musical Calvin Berger at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ, according to Variety. Noah Weisberg (South Pacific, Legally Blonde) will play the title role in this modern-day retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac set in an American high school. Previews begin on February 10, with opening night set for February 19. The show is scheduled to run through March 14.
In addition to Weisberg, the cast will include David Hull (national tours of A Chorus Line and Wicked), Krystal Joy Brown (High School Musical at Paper Mill), and Dana Steingold. The show features a rock score and book by Barry Wyner.
The musical centers on Calvin, who’s stressed out about a nose he can’t hide and a girl he can’t get. With a creative little scheme, some geeky charm and eloquent words, he goes to great lengths to have the star jock deliver his love-struck letters. But what if the girl of his dreams was right under his nose all along?
Calvin Berger debuted at Gloucester Stage Company in 2006 and was produced by Barrington Stage in 2007 with a cast that included Aaron Tveit as Calvin’s jock friend Matt.
