The singing-and-dancing high school show Glee took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Comedy or Musical when the 67th annual awards were presented in Hollywood on January 17. The freshman series beat out 30 Rock, Entourage, Modern Family and The Office to win the prize.
"This is for anybody and everybody who got a wedgie in high school," said Glee creator Ryan Murphy from the podium, adding that the show highlighted the importance of arts education in school.
Among the stage veterans who took home awards on the big night were Meryl Streep (Julie and Julia), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Toni Collette (United States of Tara), John Lithgow (Dexter) and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock). Hall surprised many viewers by appearing onstage in a black cap, an indication of his recent revelation that he's battling Hodgkin's lymphoma.
The big screen adaptation of Nine received five Golden Globe nominations but left empty-handed. The summer comedy hit The Hangover beat out Nine in the category of Best Picture - Comedy or Musical.
Other big winners of the night were Avatar (Best Picture - Drama), Up (Best Animated Film), Mad Men (Best Television Series - Drama) and Grey Gardens (Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television).
