Tony nominee Hunter Foster will play legendary Sun Records music producer Sam Phillips in the Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet, joined by four of the original stars of the Chicago production of the show playing the musical greats Phillips discovered: Eddie Clendening as Elvis Presley, Lance Guest as Johnny Cash, Levi Kreis as Jerry Lee Lewis and Rob Lyons as Carl Perkins. Elizabeth Stanley (Cry-Baby) will complete the cast as Presley's girlfriend Dyanne. Performances start at the Nederlander Theatre on March 13, 2010 with an opening set for April 11.
Million Dollar Quartet, a hit at Chicago's Apollo Theatre since 2008, recreates December 4, 1956, the historic day in the Memphis Sun Records studio that brought together Presley, Cash, Lewis and Perkins. A recording exists of the impromptu jam session that happened once newly-famous Presley and Cash stopped by to see Perkins doing some recording with Lewis on piano. Million Dollar Quartet includes some of the actual songs that were performed on the day as well as standards for the quartet including "Blue Suede Shoes," "Who Do You Love?," "Great Balls of Fire," "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On."
Foster has memorably appeared on Broadway as Leo Bloom in The Producers, Seymour Krelborn in Little Shop of Horrors (Tony Award nomination) and Bobby Strong in Urinetown. Other notable credits include Broadway productions of Les Miserables, Grease, Footloose and King David and off-Broadway runs in Ordinary Days, Happiness, Frankenstein and Modern Orthodox.
Clendening tours with his rockabilly band Eddie Clendening and the Blue Ribbon Boys and has recorded two albums, Eddie Clendening is…The Rage of the Teen-Age! and the upcoming Eddie Clendening is…Knockin' at Your Heart.
Guest, who has played Cash in every incarnation of the show, has appeared in many films and TV shows over a 30-year career, including Lou Grant, St. Elsewhere, I Ought to Be in Pictures, Knots Landing, The Wonder Years, Life Goes On, Party of Five, Becker, JAG, NYPD Blue and Jericho. He also sang onstage with the political comedy group The Foremen.
Kreis, who received a Jeff Award nomination for the Chicago production of Million Dollar Quartet, appeared as Roger in a national tour of Rent. As a recording artist, he has released three albums: One of the Ones, The Gospel According to Levi and Where I Belong.
Lyons is a singer/songwriter from Seattle who makes his stage debut with Million Dollar Quartet.
Stanley is currently starring as Kira in the national tour of Xanadu. Broadway credits include Company and Cry-Baby.
Million Dollar Quartet, written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott and directed by Mutrux, premiered at the Seaside Music Theatre in Florida and was later staged at the Village Theatre in Seattle. It then opened at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago in September 2008 under the direction of Eric Schaeffer for a limited run, prior to transferring to the Apollo Theatre on October 31, 2008.
Directed by Schaeffer, the Broadway production of Million Dollar Quartet will feature sets by Derek McLane, lighting by Howell Binkley, costumes by Jane Greenwood, sound design by Kai Harada and musical arrangements and supervision by Chuck Mead.
