Tony Award-winning actress Priscilla Lopez has joined the cast of the forthcoming Encores! production of Fanny, replacing Rondi Reed, who withdrew “due to illness,” according to a news release. The musical will run February 4–7 at New York City Center, directed by Marc Bruni, with choreography by Lorin Latarro with music direction by Rob Berman.
In addition to Lopez, the cast includes Fred Applegate, George Hearn, David Patrick Kelly, Michael McCormick, Elena Shaddow, James Snyder and Ted Sutherland.
Set in Marseille, Fanny features one of Broadway’s greatest love stories, a tale of a young girl (Shaddow) in love with a young man (Snyder) who leaves her for life on the sea, not realizing that she is pregnant with his child. Her marriage of convenience to a wealthy older man (Applegate) desperate to have an heir is complicated by the sailor’s return years later. The show, which debuted on Broadway in 1954, features a romantic score by Harold Rome and a book by Joshua Logan and S.N. Behrman.
Lopez (Honorine), a Tony winner for A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine and Tony nominee for creating the role of Diana in A Chorus Line, is currently appearing on Broadway in In the Heights. Her Broadway credits include Anna in the Tropics, The Sisters Rosensweig, Nine, Lysistrata, Pippin, Company and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Off-Broadway, she was seen in The Passion of Frida Kahlo, Antigone in New York, Other People's Money, Extremities and Key Exchange.
