Each year, the Drama League honors a theatrical luminary at a gala dinner and performance benefitting the organization’s renowned Directors Project. When A Little Night Music headliner Angela Lansbury agreed to be feted on February 8 at the Pierre Hotel, the floodgates opened: More than 400 guests paid big bucks to toast the five-time Tony winner, and Broadway’s best happily got dolled up to perform for “Angie.” In a musical celebration staged by Directors Project alum Michael Mayer and Beatrice Terry, stars such as Bernadette Peters, Donna Murphy and Lansbury’s Tony-winning co-stars Len Cariou (Sweeney Todd) and Frankie Michaels (Mame) gave their all. After being serenaded with a customized rendition of “Mame,” the classy Lansbury have a heartfelt thank-you speech. Seated ringside, Broadway.com had a great view of this emotion-packed event.
