Tony winner Mandy Pantinkin is confirmed to star in London's previously announced Paradise Found. The musical, jointly directed by Hal Prince and Susan Stroman, will begin its run at the Menier Chocolate Factory on May 19 and open on June 2.
Based on the Joseph Roth novel The Tale of the 1002nd Night, Paradise Found is the story of the impotent Shah of Persia, husband to 139 wives, whose eunuch convinces him to take a life-changing trip to Vienna. Patinkin will play the Shah's eunuch.
Patinkin's numerous Broadway credits include a Tony Award-winning performance in Evita, as well as turns in Sunday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Falsettos and The Wild Party. His many film credits include The Princess Bride, Yentl, Dick Tracy and Lulu on the Bridge as well as leading roles on the TV series Chicago Hope and Dead Like Me.
Broadway veterans Shuler Hensley, Kate Baldwin, John Cullum and Judy Kaye, who all took part in the New York readings of the show with Patinkin, and are expected to cross the pond for its London debut. No additional casting has been confirmed at this time.
Paradise Found features a book by Richard Nelson, lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh and music by Johann Strauss II, as adapted by Jonathan Tunick.
Paradise Found will play the Menier through June 26, with a Broadway transfer in the works.
