Tony winner Betty Buckley is set to star in Ben Andron’s White’s Lies off-Broadway. The new comedy, directed by Bob Cline, will begin previews on March 22 and open on April 12 at New World Stages.
Buckley, who will play Mrs. White, joins a cast that includes the previously announced Scott Patterson in the title role as well as Peter Scolari, Christy Carlson Romano and Jimmy Ray Bennett.
White’s Lies centers on Joe White, who’s handsome and charming, with a great career and plenty of girlfriends. His mother (Buckley) drops a bombshell: She’s got cancer, and her dying wish is to have a grandchild. With his bachelorhood threatened, Joe could find a nice girl to settle down and have kids with, or he could convince his bitter, angry ex-girlfriend from college—who just happens to have a daughter in her early twenties—to pretend that her daughter is his daughter. As their tangled web of lies unravels, Joe and company find themselves on a hilarious journey full of twists and turns.
Buckley won a Tony Award for her performance as Grizabella in Cats. Her other Broadway credits include 1776, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Song & Dance, Carrie, Pippin, Sunset Boulevard on Broadway and in London (where she received an Olivier nomination for her performance) and Triumph of Love, for which she received a Tony nomination. Her film credits include Carrie, Tender Mercies, Frantic and Another Woman. She is well known for her role on TV’s Eight is Enough, and her additional television credits include Without A Trace, Law & Order: SVU, Monk, Remember Wenn, Oz and the upcoming The Pacific. Although she is a regular on the nightclub scene (and is currently appearing at Feinstein's at the Loews Regency through February 27), White’s Lies will mark Buckley’s first appearance on the New York stage in seven years.
